A scene from yesterday:
Me: Old McDonald had a farm...
Toby chiming in: B-O-B-O-I
And, did you know that, on that farm he had some:
* Trains (of course he did!)
* Trucks (I've never met a farmer who didn't)
* Owls
and
* Juice?
That's how we sing it at our house, at least. Yeah, sure, why not?
It usually goes, "Old McDonald had a farm" followed by a string of randomly generated letters, mostly vowels, provided by Toby.
Except for yesterday.
The mechanic was able to fix the car the same day we brought it in. And it turned out to be a lot less expensive than we thought it would be to fix - but we weren't able to pick it up until yesterday because Oliver had clients to see the whole day before and wasn't able to get away during business hours.
I picked up Oliver at work yesterday, and we went to the mechanics to pick up the car. Then, we caravaned over to McDonald's for a quick bite to eat before Oliver went back to work.
This was the scene yesterday:
Me: "Hey, Toby, come on - we're going to met your dad at McDonald's for lunch.
Toby: E-I-E-I-O
That's right folks, E-I-E-I-O!

Almost a "Poor Little Critter in the Road"

We spotted the apartment maintenance workers on our way to check the mail today. They were just finishing up for the day and had golf clubs in their maintenance golf carts - which I stopped to tease them about. They also had a stuffed cat, which Toby spotted immediately, pointed and said, "meow" repeatably. "Would you like to pet the kitty?" he said, which sounds a little creepy now that I think of it, but we know this guy, and he's cool. He gave Toby the stuffed kitty and said he could have it. "What are you doing driving around in your maintanence golf-cart with a stuffed kitty?" I asked. He said he got it out of a free bin and, since the fur looked so real, they were going to put it behind their friend's car tires as a prank. But, when he saw how much Toby loved it, he thought he needed to have it more than he needed to play a prank on his friend.

Can Mama get a kiss too?

Bee Beds & Beerocks
It was 98 degrees in Fresno today, a new record for this time of year. It's hard to believe that tomorrow is Earth Day! It feels like summer, not spring. But spring it is, and the flowers are blooming everywhere. The pollen counts are high and the bees have their work cut out for them. Toby likes to watch them buzz from one blossom to the next, resting gently on the pink petals for a few seconds before moving on. He's started calling the flowers, "bee beds"; a toddler gem I thought was just too cute not to share.

A bee buzzing around the bee beds:

Also, anyone ever hear of "Beerocks"? I hadn't until I moved here. I've heard that they are also called "Bierocks," outside of Fresno, which I had also never heard of before I moved here. From what I gather, it's an individual beef and cabbage pie - a sort of hamburger baked inside it's own bun. I took Toby to "The Beerock Shop" for lunch, but there was a really long line of people queueing up to buy these things. It was too long of a wait to get to the cash register so we ended up leaving. I was holding Toby in my arms, and they were starting to shake, and he was starting to squirm, so we ended up leaving. Some other day, perhaps.

Planting a Seed
It's spring, and I've been seeing pregnant women and babies everywhere!
One of my friend's is even pregnant with twins.
My "baby" has reached the age where he is a toddler - no longer a baby - and, although I am so excited that he is happy and healthy, that his vocabulary is increasing, and his curioucity is insatiable, part of me really misses having a little bundle to cuddle in my arms.
I never thought I'd want to go through pregnancy and labor again, and I like sleeping. I like sleeping a lot - but here I am, wanting another baby.
Of course, it's really not a good time.. no, not at all. Oliver just started a new job. Toby is still in diapers, he's kind of a handful during the day, and he has gone back to waking up in the middle of the night. I also need to lose 60 pounds to be able to safely gain the 30 you gain when you're pregnant. It would be nice to get thin enough to not look like I'm still pregnant before getting pregnant again. There are lots of reasons why it's not a good idea right now.
In addition to my ticking biological clock, I miss our dog - and I've been thinking, maybe we could get a small dog that our apartment complex would allow.
But it's so much calmer at our house without the dog, and cleaner - and we have light beige carpets now that I'm obsessed with keeping that way, and no yard. Yeah, it's not a good idea to have a baby, or a dog right now.
And then, just to tempt me even more, one of my new friends here, sent out an email saying that she found a really nice, friendly, litter-box-trained, cat that she just can't keep. And our whole family loves cats, but our whole family is also allergic to cats. So, that's not a good idea either.
And then I thought, maybe I could funnel this intense biological need I have to nurture, into nurturing a small garden out on our patio.
And then I thought,
"Nah, too much work."
It's spring, and I've been seeing pregnant women and babies everywhere. It has inspired me to knit baby booties -- and, it's all making me think...
Maybe a tomato plant would be nice.
Maybe a small, cherry tomato, plant to start.

Baby Steps to Designing Knits
I just finished knitting these baby booties tonight. No pattern - just instinct, and some leftover washable merino/cashmere sock yarn from the pair I just made for myself. It's super soft and knit from the yarn of a local dyer. I love it when the plans in my head actually work out!

A Comment About Comments
I did not know that I had restricted the comments. I don't usually try to comment on my own blog anonymously, so I had no idea. But now, thanks to Rowan pointing it out to me (thanks again Rowan), I have changed the settings so that you can leave comments - with a blog ID, or not. So... if you have something to say, go on and say it. I hope to hear from you.

Fresno Knitters Spring Break Potluck Picnic
"70% chance of rain," turned out to be, a slightly windy, but otherwise beautiful day. A really lovely knitting group picnic at the park. I couldn't imagine a better way to spend a Tuesday afternoon.
Toby and his new friend
Toby had a great time too. He spent most of the time playing in the dirt with one of the knitter's granddaughter.
